Grocery Shopping On Bonaire

Grocery Shopping On Bonaire

Grocery shopping on Bonaire has truly evolved since we’ve been visiting this lovely island.  Many of the stores offer a large variety of items with familiar brands. A part of the Dutch Caribbean, and welcoming a large international tourist community, many of the food brands/labels will be recognizable in Dutch, English and Spanish. Recognizing all grocery items must be shipped to Bonaire, we find the prices to be relatively reasonable.

Below are listed some of supermarkets we visit and what we like about them ….

**************************************************************************

Van den Tweel Supermarket:

We find the Van Den Tweels to be large and clean, offering the most variety. Located on Kaya Industria, just on the circle, the Van Den Tweels is one of the newer markets on Bonaire.  The wagons need a quarter to unlock, and to avoid paying for bags, bring your own grocery bags.

Van Den Tweels has a great deli department and lots of fresh produce. They offer alcohol and baked goods, and you will find many household needs here as well. Their refrigerated and frozen sections are well stocked, too. On a personal note, my kids LOVE their frozen pizzas.

ADDRESS: 39 Kaya Industria

PRO: largest selection on the island; CON: more expensive; HOURS: 8am to 8pm 7 days a week.

Bondigrio:

We recently discovered the Bondigrio (Bonaire Discount Grocery) and instantly became a fan. This cooperative opened with the mission to force competition and prices down for grocery items on Bonaire. They have succeeded, and they offer the lowest prices on the island.  We will go to the Bondigrio several times when we go to Bonaire. If we don’t find what we are looking for, Van den Tweel is up the road, so we can finish our shopping there.

The Bondigrio has a nice produce section, and offers a decent selection of basic supermarket needs.  They do not accept credit cards, nor do they offer bags, so come prepared.

ADDRESS: 29 Kaya Industria

PRO: lowest prices; CON: no credit cards; HOURS: 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday

Zung Khong Supermarket:

Need something fast and close by? Zung Khong is the place for you. Located on Kaya Gobernador N. Debrot  just past Captain Don’s, it will be on your left as you head to Villa Lunt. Offering a small produce section, frozen section, alcohol and very basic grocery and household items, it is the place to go when you run out of something you need, or to stock up on last minute meal items. We have found the turnover of items on their shelves may be lacking. Check dates.

ADDRESS: 29 Kaya Industria

PRO: nearby; CON: high prices; HOURS: 8am to 8pm 7 days a week

Warehouse Bonaire:

The Warehouse Bonaire is on the same road as Van den Tweel & Bondigrio, and is actually owned by the Van den Tweel. The Warehouse, in my opinion, offers the next largest selection, with a lower price point – you should have no problem finding all your basic items. The store is older, and the shopping experience is not as lovely.  Since our preference is the Bondigrio & Van den Tweel, we tend not to make it to the Warehouse often. That said, my kids love the frozen pizza here as well.

ADDRESS: 24 Kaya Industria

PRO: less expensive; CON: less selection; HOURS: 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday

There are many other shops located throughout Bonaire, but we have found just hitting these 4 does the trick for us.

And if your looking for wine, allow us to recommend ….

Antillean Wine Company

Located on Kaya Industria, with limited opening hours, this is one of my favorite places to get wine. Excellent prices very nice selection.

HOURS: 9am to 1pm Monday to Saturday

ADDRESS: 23 Kaya Industria

Bonaire Sea Turtles – It’s Nesting Season

Bonaire Sea Turtles – It’s Nesting Season

Many of our guests are surprised to hear our family does not SCUBA dive. I get it, Villa Lunt is located on Bonaire, one of the most pristine diving locations around the world. Clear water, abundant coral and magnificent sea life. How can we not dive !?! We do snorkel, and very much enjoy every moment with our faces plunged in the warm Caribbean Sea.  Sea Turtles are plentiful in the waters of Bonaire. Head over to Oil Slick, 1000 Steps, or one of the Andrea Dive Sites, and I challenge you NOT to find a magnificent sea turtle swimming around.

We recently learned it is Sea Turtle Nesting Season, and Bonaire is home to 3 of the world’s 7 Sea Turtle Species – Green, Hawksbill & Loggerheads.   As of the writing of this blog, 24 nests have been located between Bonaire and Klein Bonaire according to the Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB) .  However, it is expected there are over 70 nests in total. On Bonaire, these wonderful nests are monitored & protected by staff and trained volunteers of  STCB.  They patrol the known nesting areas on Bonaire recording signs of nesting and hatching.

These beautiful sea creatures live a very fascinating life. They travel for hundreds to thousands of kilometers each year to lay their eggs in the very beaches from where they were born.  The mothers lay their eggs and go back to sea, and about 60 days later, their hatchlings emerge – all at once – and scramble together to the sea.

We hope you enjoy watching these adorable hatchlings make their way into the sea.

Bonaire Has The Best Has Some of The Best Food In The Caribbean

Te Amo Beach Bonaire

We’ve posted on here about all the restaurants we love in Bonaire. From beach side food trucks to casual dining to cafes and high end restaurants, Bonaire has some of the best food in the Caribbean.

We enjoyed finding this article about Bonaire’s amazing cuisine.

We are big fans of the beach side food trucks and have blogged about them before.  Seeing this great picture on the cover of the article really kept us wanting for more of Bonaire cuisine.  Each of the restaurants they mention, we enjoyed  ourselves, and highly recommend. If you read through our restaurant blog, you will likely find more information on most of the. There are a few we still want to write about – so keep any eye out!

Sebastian’s Sunday Night Menu

sebastians restaurant

We have always been a fan of Sebastian’s Restaurant on Bonaire. The food is amazing, the views are unbelievable, the atmosphere is relaxing, the staff is awesome, and have we mentioned the views?

The pier table, pictured above,  is available first come first serve, with no extra charge. If you are fortunate enough to reserve this table, it will be an evening to remember.

Sebastian’s recently introduced a Sunday Night Italian menu. Delicious and reasonable – at the time of writing this post traditional Italian appetizers and home-made pizza’s and pasta’s were only $16 – Sebastian’s is a wonderful option for a relaxing, laid back Sunday night meal with family and friends.

The restaurant opens at 5:30 PM & reservations are always highly recommended. The kitchen closes at 9:00 PM on Sundays.

Take-away pizza is also available; simply phone in your order to +599 717-1697.

Pizza’s may be ordered “half-half” as well.

Coco Beach Club Bonaire

Coco Beach Club Bonaire

Bonaire has a new beach club, and it is so much fun! Coco Beach Club is in Playa Lechi, next to Spice Beach Club. With many options for lounge rentals, you will find a comfortable and relaxing setting for a day of pure enjoyment.

Their bar and restaurant offers many options for food and drink, and the nice white sand of the beach with the Caribbean back drop is simply delightful.

At Coco Beach Club you will find sand courts for volley ball, beach tennis or other sports.  The snorkeling is great, and they have a nice pier you can jump off from.

Coco Beach has a great night life several evenings a week. Check their facebook page for the latest upcoming events.

Washington Slagbaai National Park

Boka Kokolishi in Washington Slagbaai

Washington Slagbaai, Bonaire’s National Park, was the first Nature Conservatory created in the Netherland Antilles. This national park & reserve, covering close to 22 square miles, is located on the northern end of Bonaire and managed by STINAPA Bonaire, a non-profit foundation, on behalf of the Bonaire government. When you arrive at the visitor center, you will be given a map of the park, which details all the stops and activities.

Our family takes the long route through the park, stopping for a picnic at Boka Kokolishi. There are rock areas which provide some shade. The warm bay has natural whirl pools, and very calm water.

We always leaving enough time to go snorkeling in Wayaka. The cliff jumping at Boka & Salina Slagbaai looks incredibly fun, but not something I have mustered the courage for! Across from Salina Slagbaai is a flamingo preserve where you can admire this beautiful bird from afar.

Visiting the Washington Slagbaai is a wonderful all day activity.  There are no services in the park, so pack up all your drinks and food for the day.  We bring along a garbage bag as well. You are required to have the marine park tag to go through the park. If you already have it, make sure to bring your receipt and ID, both are required. If you don’t already have the tag, you can buy one as you enter.

Wayaka in Bonaire Bonaire Blow Hole

There is so much to do in the park – hiking trails, biking trails, snorkeling, sightseeing, birdwatching, cliff jumping … the list goes on.  This is a day well worth spending.

Epic Tours Chill and Grill

Chill and Grill

Our family had an amazing time on the Mushi Mushi Chill and Grill tour – it was one of the highlights of our vacation.

When we visit Bonaire, we take a sail trip to reward ourselves for the work we put into making Villa Lunt spectacular for the year to come.  This year, we took 2 trips, and highly recommend both of the amazing operators. We previously posted about Bonaire From The Sea and recommend them for a private tour.  For a group tour,  Epic Tours Chill and Grill is AMAZING.

The snorkeling was unbelievable, and the guided tour was one the best we have had. Maria was incredible, she was kind and patient with all of us! She would point out all the sea life, and come up for air and tell us all about it. Our trip made 2 snorkel stops. The first by Klein Bonaire, and the second just off the coast of Sabadeco.

Michiel, our captain, cook & one of the owners, was wonderful.

The food & drink on board were delicious. Prepared to order with many options. We had steak, seafood and chicken. All yummy!

We had booked our tour online with Inka (the other owner) who was pleasant and worked with us to find the perfect time to plan our day.

Karel’s Beach Bar

karels breakfast

Karel’s Beach Bar sits on its own pier in the heart of Bonaire. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner the restaurant offers good food at a fair price with an unbelievable view. The bar at Karel’s serves great drinks with lots of signature cocktails.

On a recent trip to Bonaire, we had the opportunity to take in the morning sun, while eating a delicious breakfast. The view, the food, the weather, all were just magnificent.

Karel’s comes a live at night, offering karaoke nights, live music and dance events with Bonaire’s best DJ’s.

Checkout the video below – surprised they didn’t mention the delicious breakfast, but we highly recommend it!

Dive Friends Bonaire

Dive Friends partner Villa Lunt

Bonaire is well known as a diver’s paradise. When you arrive on Bonaire, you may question which dive vendor you should work with. We recommend Dive Friends Bonaire, with  7 full-service locations, assistance is always nearby & tank exchange is a breeze. They are a PADI 5- Star IDC Dive center, and cater to divers of every skill level and all ages.

All Dive Friends facilities are fully equipped with rental gear, should you require any. They offer the Bonaire Marine Park orientation during normal business hours. And, they offer Villa Lunt guests a 10% discount. When you reserve your vacation at Villa Lunt, we will contact Dive Friends Bonaire on our behalf, with your permission. After the initial contact, they will create a voucher for your group, and assist you with any reservations you would like to make.

What we admire most about Dive Friends is their commitment to the health of the reefs and sea life on Bonaire. Dive Friends plans quarterly cleanup dives – these well advertised, well attended events are coordinated for the purpose of keeping Bonaire blue and beautiful. Below is a video from their April 2018 clean up dive. If you are interested in participating in one of their cleanup dive, please let us know.

Snorkeling Bonaire

Snorkeling on Bonaire

Our family LOVES snorkeling Bonaire. And, it couldn’t be easier. Bonaire is well known for her easy access for shore diving for SCUBA divers, and with that comes awesome fishing finding for snorkelers. The sea is calm and the water is clear.

Some of our favorite sites are located very close to Villa Lunt.

  • 1000 Steps which isn’t really 1000 steps, but the stone stair case will bring you down to a fabulous snorkel option
  • Oil Slick, where you can combine some fun cliff jumping with snorkeling.
  • Andrea I & Andrea II are a healthy walking distance from Villa Lunt, but located within the Sabadeco neighborhoods. We enjoy snorkeling at these sites, then jumping off the Sabadeco pier.

We also enjoy bringing our snorkel gear to many of the beaches on Bonaire.

  • Spice Beach has a great pier which you can easily access the water while geared up. The pier also attracts lots of fish. As you swim around the pier, you can head toward Coco Beach
  • Te’Amo Beach has a beautiful Coral with lots of sea life to be seen. We enjoy spending time snorkeling here while enjoying the Kite City Food truck for a nice lunch. Don’t forget the beach chairs in the garage!
  • Jibe City is fun to snorkel around. The water is very shallow. We find much less sea life in this area, but it’s fun day all around, and only more enhanced with snorkels and a fin.

Almost any shore dive site will wow you as a snorkeler. No matter where you go in the water, you are sure to find beautiful fish all around. If you are feeling a little adventurist, grab a dive map, and head out to any shore access site, snorkel up, and have fun.
